EPFL researchers have developed a flexible auditory brainstem implant (ABI) that could restore hearing for patients who can’t use cochlear implants. Unlike rigid ABIs, this soft device conforms to the brainstem, improving precision and reducing side effects. In macaque trials, it enabled near-natural sound recognition without discomfort, marking a major step toward more effective hearing restoration.
