World First: Engineers Train AI at Lightspeed

Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have created the first programmable photonic chip capable of training nonlinear neural networks using light, a breakthrough that could vastly accelerate AI development while reducing energy use. Unlike traditional chips that rely on electricity, this
chip uses beams of light to perform complex, nonlinear operations critical for deep learning. Published in Nature Photonics, the research marks a key step toward fully light-powered AI systems.
